i. why i started
- i was already using notion for most of my notes and journaling
- basically my second brain
- but i wanted to try something else,
- the concepts of digital garden and zettelkasten have always sat in the back of my mind
→ and obsidian was one of the possible note taking tools for this (cause it has this cool graph tool to connect nodes) - coincidentally,
- i also stumbled upon this video entitled creating a digital garden to end my doomscrolling by Anna Howard
i thought it was the final nudge for me to try this out
ii. how i started
- i watched videos to set up my obsidian vault following some sort of organisational system (cf. obsidian the king of learning tools)
- how to set up the folders
- atomic notes
- source notes
- tags system
- this was also a motivation to read more, take more notes, consume… and write more basically
- in parallel, i started reading a lot of substack articles (great alternative to social media, would recommend, without falling into the trap of doomscrolling over there too)
- … so yeah one thing leading to another…
- i have accumulated a handful of notes in my personal vault, but they sometimes are a little bit too “copy pasted”
- cause that’s how i read and learn, sometimes i’d just copy paste the content and go through it and highlight things, take notes in the same file…
- tldr; it’s still pretty messy at times.
- but it is a good base to get started, and i can use it for this place too!
- yeah i still need to transfer a bunch of notes from there to here now…
- cause that’s how i read and learn, sometimes i’d just copy paste the content and go through it and highlight things, take notes in the same file…
iii. how i like it
- i have been liking it so far,
- i like the easy and simple system, no fancy or pretentious feature or layout, nothing complicated or requiring a steep learning curve
- everything is intuitive, straightforward and focused on the essential purpose: writing
- like i said, i feel like using it opened doors to other stuff as well (substack, digital garden, knowledge)
iv. whats my goal
- hmm am not sure here, i think it
- started with curiosity and exploration
- then, it was about reading more and populating the folders (and at the same time, my mind too)
- the novelty did fizzle out, and i am no longer using it as consistently (daily)
- but it feels like i have something started if i ever want to pick this back up
- and it’s always a good thing because sometimes the most daunting thing is to get started with something totally new and unknown— the friction is higher vs. knowing you already did the heavy lifting of figuring how this works and whatnot… momentum
… i guess yeah, i don’t have a particular goal with this, i hope i keep using it,
or maybe i’ll start using this 🪴 le jardin 🪴 vault more?
