i. definitions
Anaerobic vs. aerobic exercise refers to the different energy systems your body uses to power different types of workouts.
Aerobic exercise uses oxygen to fuel longer, lower-intensity activity
→ cardio
i.e. focuses on your heart, endurance,Anaerobic exercise uses glycogen instead of oxygen for short-term, powerful bursts of activity (high intensity, explosive, demanding in energy)
→ strength and power training
not black and white,
they can both come into play in a session, with a specific activity,
ii. aerobic
- uses oxygen to power your muscles during longer, lower intensity workouts
- vs. relying on stored sources of energy (anaerobic)
e.g.
- walking
- running
- cycling
- hiking
- swimming
- dancing
benefits
- stronger heart, cardiovascular system
- mental health :D
iii. anaerobic
- uses glycogen (a form of glucose or sugar)
- that is stored in muscles to fuel movement, without oxygen
- vs. relying on oxygen to power muscles and movement (aerobic)
- builds up lactic acid in your muscles (that pump feeling)
e.g.
- weight lifting
- high intensity interval training (HIIT)
- plyometrics
- sprinting
benefits
- you become stronger, more powerful
- your muscle builds up higher lactate threshold (i.e. clears lactic acid faster) → more endurance
- stronger bones
