i. definitions

Anaerobic vs. aerobic exercise refers to the different energy systems your body uses to power different types of workouts.

Aerobic exercise uses oxygen to fuel longer, lower-intensity activity
cardio
i.e. focuses on your heart, endurance,

Anaerobic exercise uses glycogen instead of oxygen for short-term, powerful bursts of activity (high intensity, explosive, demanding in energy)
strength and power training

not black and white,
they can both come into play in a session, with a specific activity,

ii. aerobic

  • uses oxygen to power your muscles during longer, lower intensity workouts
    • vs. relying on stored sources of energy (anaerobic)

e.g.

  • walking
  • running
  • cycling
  • hiking
  • swimming
  • dancing

benefits

  • stronger heart, cardiovascular system
  • mental health :D

iii. anaerobic

  • uses glycogen (a form of glucose or sugar)
    • that is stored in muscles to fuel movement, without oxygen
    • vs. relying on oxygen to power muscles and movement (aerobic)
  • builds up lactic acid in your muscles (that pump feeling)

e.g.

  • weight lifting
  • high intensity interval training (HIIT)
  • plyometrics
  • sprinting

benefits

  • you become stronger, more powerful
  • your muscle builds up higher lactate threshold (i.e. clears lactic acid faster) more endurance
  • stronger bones

iv. recommendations

  • what’s the split? or what are stuff to look out for?
